Volunteer Assist ESL Instructor

Summary

 

The Assistant ESL Instructor, or Teaching Assistant, provides classroom support for the leading ESL Instructor as they guide RIS online courses, by preparing materials, interacting with students, and supervising projects. Assist ESL Instructor duties include preparing lesson plans, tutoring students one-on-one or in groups, taking attendance, and monitoring student progress.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • If required, interoperation of ESL lessons (grammar, vocabulary, etc.).

  • Preparing online course equipment and instructional materials for lessons.

  • Performing recordkeeping duties associated with the online course, including attendance and grade calculation.

  • Instructing students in proper online course procedures and behavior.

  • Collaborating with teachers and parents on a regular basis regarding student progress.

  • Adapting instructional materials as necessary to meet special education guidelines.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Native Dari, Farsi, and Pashto speaker.

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is a plus.

  • Strong understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries.

  • Enthusiasm for working with students with interrupted and/or limited formal schooling, and in some cases, limited literacy skills (both in English and/or their native language).

  • Knowledge of WhatsApp, Google Docs, Microsoft Office/Teams, and Zoom.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

 

  • Degree in TESOL; and/or 

  • TESOL certification from a state licensing agency; and/or

  • Have a minimum of 1-2 years of experience in TESOL or formal classroom experience, teaching English in the U.S.

  • Experience working with refugees or other newcomers who have experienced trauma.

  • Teaching experience in the field of computer literacy.

  • Working with small NGOs and organizations that provide internet services is a plus.

  • Experience working with English language learners with interrupted education and/or limited literacy skills.

Physical Abilities: Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person, over the computer, and on the phone; seeing to read and prepare lessons; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; kneeling, bending of the waist, and reaching overhead to write on the whiteboard.
